Ah, bathroom cleaning. No one likes to clean toilets- it’s just icky. But unfortunately we have to! So if we are going to clean the toilet, we might as well make it fast and easy. This awesome homemade toilet bowl cleaner is green, natural, effective, and takes so little work to use. It is so easy it doesn’t feel like work at all.

After all, who wants to use bathroom cleaners with icky ingredients that make you feel dizzy? before I switched to making my own cleaners, I used to have to take breaks from cleaning, especially in the bathroom. The scents and fumes from the store-bought cleaners would make me feel dizzy! Well, that doesn’t happen anymore!

So if you love green cleaning, and you want a clean home, this green homemade toilet bowl cleaner is for you! If you’re interested, you should also check out my other green cleaning recipes for green cleaning month in March! While you’re cleaning your toilet, you might as well get those tubs and tiles too! But for now, enjoy this awesome toilet cleaner.

I always like to explain why I use each ingredient and why they work in the recipe:

  • Borax: disinfects, counteracts hard water stains, loosens dirt, is an alkaline compound, which works well in combination with the acidity of vinegar
  • Vinegar: sanitizes, loosens dirt, is acidic, which works well in combination with the alkalinity of borax
  • Essential oils (optional): for scent, and depending on the oil can have other properties as well (I used lemon in this recipe- I just love that lemon fresh smell!)

How to Make Homemade Toilet Fizz Bombs (Only Three Ingredients)

When I first saw the recipe for these toilet bombs on Maria’s Self about a year ago, I thought it looked super awesome. I was still in the beginning stages of learning about green cleaning and it seemed like a more “advanced” recipe to me. Well, trust me, it’s not. I just didn’t know what citric acid was yet. This recipe is ridiculously simple and that’s what makes it so great!

There’s something so satisfying about dropping one of these into water and watching it fizz away. And they smell so fresh. Obviously these can’t replace cleaning your toilet, but they do deodorize smells and kill bacteria! So they are great for in between cleans.

It cost me $3.91 to make one batch of these toilet bombs. For me, that was about 30 toilet fizz bombs. And they’re green and all natural. And so much fun to use.

How to Make Homemade Toilet Fizz Bombs (Only Three Ingredients)

The best part is, there are only three ingredients:

  • Citric Acid: removes build up and scale, reduces effects of hard water, antibacterial, adds awesome fizziness (you can get it here)
  • Baking Soda: deodorizes smells, great all purpose cleaner
  • Essential Oils: bind baking soda and citric acid together, antibacterial (depending on which oils you use), natural scent

So don’t be scared if you haven’t heard of citric acid before. It’s a great thing to have around for green cleaning.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/3 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup citric acid
  • 90 drops of essential oils (I used 30 drops of lemon, 30 peppermint, 20 orange, and 10 lavender)

Directions:

  1. Put the essential oil mix you want to use together in a small spray bottle and set aside
  2. Mix baking soda and citric acid together carefully. If you want, you can use a medical mask to ensure you don’t breathe in any fumes from mixing these together.
  3. Slowly spray the essential oils on the baking soda and citric acid while mixing until you’ve used all 90 drops. It should fizz a little bit when the moisture touches the mixture, but if there is excessive fizzing you are spraying too quickly. The mixture should start to clump and look like the picture on the right above when it is ready to be put into molds
  4. If necessary, you can add a small amount of water in addition to the oils to help bind the baking soda and citric acid together. Don’t use too much or they won’t fizz when they touch water
  5. Put the mixture into a silicone mold- or you can press it into an ice cube tray
  6. Let the bombs dry for at least 6 hours, then remove from the molds and store in a container with a tight lid
  7. Drop into the toilet and fizz away!

How to Make Homemade Toilet Fizz Bombs (Only Three Ingredients)These things are awesome. It is so fun to let them fizz and do their job. And they smell great. Who needs a scented candle in the bathroom when you have fizzy toilet bombs?

And you gotta love it when you can make a cute shape out of a cleaning product. I love my little hearts! I also made some cool star shapes and some plain cubes. But the hearts were definitely the cutest.

How to Make Homemade Toilet Fizz Bombs (Only Three Ingredients)I might run out of these toilet fizz bombs quickly because they are so much fun too use… let’s hope I can exercise some self control and use them only when I need to.

Try making some yourself and let me know how it goes!

Green Bathroom Cleaners Part Two On to part two of Green Bathroom Cleaners! Don’t forget to check out Green Bathroom Cleaners Part One if you missed it. Part Three will be out next week. Man, it takes a lot to keep a bathroom clean, right? Like I said in part one, bathroom cleaning products are some of the worst offenders when it comes to harmful chemicals:

  • Butoxydiglycol: toxic for the reproductive system
  • Alkyl C12-18 dimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride: Highly toxic to aquatic organisms, considered acutely toxic
  • PEG Compounds: harmful to human nervous system and can harm development, potential carcinogen
  • Artificial Fragrance: artificial fragrances can indicate up to 4000 ingredients, which can range from causing allergic reactions to being carcinogenic
  • Isobutane: irritant to eyes and skin, may be toxic to human health

And that’s just a few of the many ingredients store bought cleaners contain.

The safest way to clean your bathroom is to know every ingredient you are using. When I use commercial cleaners to clean my bathroom, I have to step out and take breaks because the fumes make me feel dizzy and awful. When I use these cleaners, there is no problem. They smell like lemon and sometimes a hint of vinegar. And they work just as well if not better.

They are also really easy on your budget. The seven green cleaners in this three part series use only five different ingredients: borax, baking soda, liquid castile soap, white distilled vinegar, and lemon essential oil. And they all cost less than a dollar to make. You can’t beat that.

This image summarizes all the cleaning recipes I will go over. Scroll down for more details and photos of the cleaners in action. Green Bathroom Cleaners Let’s start with a Green Tub and Tile Cleaner Green Bathroom Cleaners Tub and Tile Cleaner A tub and tile cleaner is a staple for bathroom cleaning. What’s a bathroom without tub and tiles right? Our bathroom has a tile floor and the walls are tile half way up. So we need a lot of this stuff. The recipe is nice and simple:

  • 1 2/3 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup liquid castile soap
  • 2 tbsp vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 10-15 drops lemon essential oil (optional)

Green Bathroom Cleaners Tub and Tile Cleaner The mixture is nice and thick and foamy. So it will need to be in a jar. I tried using a spray bottle because I was being hopeful, but it did not work. It’s too thick. The thickness is good though. The baking soda is just gritty enough to give it good scrubbing ability and the castile soap makes it foam nicely.Green Bathroom Cleaners Tub and Tile Cleaner You can see from this picture just how dirty our tub got. It’s pretty embarrassing. So focus on the cleaner instead. You can tell how thick and foamy it is. Great for scrubbing.Green Bathroom Cleaners Tub and Tile Cleaner And here is our clean tub after using this tub and tile cleaner! Awesome!Green Bathroom Cleaners Tub and Tile Cleaner And the floor. I’m also embarrassed to show this picture. The brown stain is from a honey face mask I tried out. I just felt like I should explain it. It was really drippy. Green Bathroom Cleaners Tub and Tile Cleaner And check out that floor after! Love this tub and tile cleaner. And on to the next cleaner…

Green Bathroom Cleaners

Our bathroom was getting pretty dirty, so I figured it was a good time to write a post about green bathroom cleaners. Well, it’s actually such a long post that I’m going to have to split it into three parts. So this is part one, and you can read part two here, and part three here.

Bathroom cleaning products are some of the worst offenders when it comes to harmful chemicals:

  • Butoxydiglycol: toxic for the reproductive system
  • Alkyl C12-18 dimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride: Highly toxic to aquatic organisms, considered acutely toxic
  • PEG Compounds: harmful to human nervous system and can harm development, potential carcinogen
  • Artificial Fragrance: artificial fragrances can indicate up to 4000 ingredients, which can range from causing allergic reactions to being carcinogenic
  • Isobutane: irritant to eyes and skin, may be toxic to human health

And that’s just to name a few.

Am I the only one who gets dizzy when I use commercial cleaning products? The fumes make me feel awful. When I use the cleaners I make myself, they just smell like lemon, sometimes with a hint of vinegar. Amazing. I love not feeling like I need to wear heavy duty gloves and a mask on my face to use my cleaners. No dizziness, no awful fumes, benefits for everyone. And don’t be fooled by all the commercial disinfecting products that make you think you can’t get rid of bacteria with gentler products- all these products are antibacterial.

Plus green cleaners are very inexpensive to make. The seven green cleaners in this three part series use only five different ingredients: borax, baking soda, liquid castile soap, white distilled vinegar, and lemon essential oil. And they all cost less than a dollar to make.

Here are all the recipes put together in one image. The post below goes into more details and has lots and lots of pictures, but this is the post at a glance:

Green Bathroom Cleaners

So, first things first, let’s get started with an All Purpose Cleaner.
