I am loving this adorable DIY halloween shirt! This tutorial is so easy to follow, and the final product is adorable. Who says you need a full out costume to be festive? This fun "boo" shirt is perfect for halloween, and you won't believe how easy it is to make!

Last weekend, I was getting ready to go to a Halloween party when I realized I had nothing to wear! I don’t have any cute halloween clothes- how is that possible? I love themed and festive things. So at the last minute I wanted to make something fun and I came up with this adorable shirt! In total the project took me less than 30 minutes and then I was off to the party, appropriately festive. And the shirt was a hit!

I did this project using my Cricut Explore Air, which is quickly becoming my favorite craft tool. I used it to make my adorable studio sign for my office that I absolutely love. And now this shirt is so amazingly easy to make with such great results. What’s not to love?

I was a bit nervous to try using iron-on vinyl, but it went really well. For my first time using iron-on vinyl I think I did a pretty good job! I used this tutorial from Rae Gun Ramblings to figure out what to do.

Alright- who’s ready to craft? I’ll walk you step by step how to make this shirt, and you can even download the design I used for free to make your own boo shirt!

I am loving this adorable DIY halloween shirt! This tutorial is so easy to follow, and the final product is adorable. Who says you need a full out costume to be festive? This fun "boo" shirt is perfect for halloween, and you won't believe how easy it is to make!

tools and supplies:

step one: download file

boo-cut

Click the image to download the file!

This step is pretty self explanatory! Just click the image above to download the file you need to make this shirt. My favorite part is the little ghost.

The image is backwards- but don’t worry, that’s on purpose. When you cut iron-on vinyl you cut it backwards because the underside ends up becoming the front of the design.

step two: import image to cricut design studio

Launch your cricut design studio and start a new project. You’ll want to upload the image, and you can do this by clicking the upload image tab on the left. Them press the “upload image” button.

The upload will ask you what type of image it is, and you should select simple image. Next you will click through the select and erase and press next. Because the file is in .png format, the image is already transparent and you wont need to remove the background.

The images below show you what this process looks like:

step three: insert image to cricut design studio

Now that you’ve uploaded your image, you’ll want to insert it into your design studio so you can make the cut!

Click on the image you uploaded, and click insert images. You’ll want to resize the image to your desired size. I made mine 11″ by 7.48″, because I wanted a large design. You can size it to fit your shirt.

I am loving this adorable DIY halloween shirt! This tutorial is so easy to follow, and the final product is adorable. Who says you need a full out costume to be festive? This fun "boo" shirt is perfect for halloween, and you won't believe how easy it is to make!

Step four: prepare your mat

Now that your design is ready, you’ll want to prepare your mat. You’ll want to place your vinyl front side down. The back side will look much duller and you should be able to tell the difference, as you can see in the photo below.

Make sure you have enough vinyl for the size you selected in the previous step.

Once your mat is prepared, you can load it into the Cricut machine. Make sure to set your dial to “iron on vinyl.”

I am loving this adorable DIY halloween shirt! This tutorial is so easy to follow, and the final product is adorable. Who says you need a full out costume to be festive? This fun "boo" shirt is perfect for halloween, and you won't believe how easy it is to make!

step five: cut and peel

Now you’re ready to cut! If you press the green circle that says “go” in Cricut design studio, it will show you a preview of your design. Approve the preview and then press the flashing “go” on the machine once you are ready to cut.

When the cut is finished, you can peel away the excess vinyl to leave your design behind.

I am loving this adorable DIY halloween shirt! This tutorial is so easy to follow, and the final product is adorable. Who says you need a full out costume to be festive? This fun "boo" shirt is perfect for halloween, and you won't believe how easy it is to make!

step six: weed

When you peeled away the vinyl, the smaller pieces on the inside of letters and the ghost eyes did not come up. It’s time to “weed” those out. You can use the cricut weeder to do this- or possibly a toothpick. Just push along the edge and the vinyl should pop up.

step seven: iron on

Once you’ve got the design how you want it, you’re ready to iron it on! You will leave the plastic on the front of the vinyl to iron over.

Place your design right side up on the shirt where you want it to be located. You’ll want to use a setting for cotton on your iron without water.

I put some cardboard between the top and the bottom to keep the shirt stiff and easy to iron. Then iron away for several minutes until you are confident the vinyl has attached to the shirt. And now you’re done! Just peel away the plastic and you’re ready to go!

Woohoo- you’re done!

I love this shirt because it’s cute and festive. I can’t get over how cute the ghost exclamation point is. I’m so glad I added it- it’s the small details that really make a big difference in the final design.

And who doesn’t love a little sparkle?

I am loving this adorable DIY halloween shirt! This tutorial is so easy to follow, and the final product is adorable. Who says you need a full out costume to be festive? This fun "boo" shirt is perfect for halloween, and you won't believe how easy it is to make!

I honestly can’t believe how easy it was to make this shirt. I feel like I should customize all the shirts I own now… but I won’t go that crazy.

But at least now I know I can make something pretty quickly at the last minute!

I am loving this adorable DIY halloween shirt! This tutorial is so easy to follow, and the final product is adorable. Who says you need a full out costume to be festive? This fun "boo" shirt is perfect for halloween, and you won't believe how easy it is to make!

And the important part is, Biscuit approves. He even got his hair all over it. Why do I ever wear black clothes?

But who could say no to that adorable face?

I am loving this adorable DIY halloween shirt! This tutorial is so easy to follow, and the final product is adorable. Who says you need a full out costume to be festive? This fun "boo" shirt is perfect for halloween, and you won't believe how easy it is to make!

All in all, one of my favorite cricut projects to date. I feel like I’m getting the hang of it now so you can expect more fun cricut tutorials from me! I might even have a little holiday idea up my sleeve… I can’t wait to share it.

But for now, I’m loving my boo shirt!

What do you think? Are you ready to make your shirt?

I couldn’t resist taking these adorable holiday themed pictures of Falafel. Now that I feel like I’m starting to get the basics of this photography thing… I had to show off her cuteness. So please enjoy the world’s most adorable (and festive) hedgehog!

Who’s that hiding there in the ornaments?

Falafel the hedgehog brings cuteness to a new level! Happy holidays from the adorable hedgehog.

It’s Falafel! (Check out her cute little teeth!)

Spreading holiday cheer to all!

Ok, I’m a huge nerd. But how could I not with all this cuteness! And don’t worry- Falafel got extra worms for being such a good sport taking these pictures. She’s been in a particularly good mood the past few days- must be the holiday spirit!

Oh, and I don’t want to forget to say…

HAPPY HEDGIEDAYS!

I hope you are having a wonderful holiday season filled with cheer, family, friends, over-eating, and of course, cute animals. Especially hedgehogs.

Holiday time! Only one of the best times of year. Now that we’ve made it through co-hosting our first (early) Skarie family christmas, I’m in full fledged christmas spirit mode. And you know what the holidays are great for? Desserts!

Well, luckily, M&M’s® have some pretty adorable (and delicious, obviously) seasonal treats! Can you get any more festive than White Chocolate Peppermint? And I’m a sucker for mini anything, so I love the M&M’s® Mini Baking Bits too!

The white chocolate peppermint M&M’s®  and holiday edition Glad storage are only available at Target– so you should head on over and pick them up today! And hurry, because you’ll want them both for this super delicious festive treat.

So- let’s get to the recipe! You know I don’t like to make anything complicated- so you can make this fudge with about 15 minutes of prep time.

Yummy chocolate fudge and mint fudge were meant to go together. With only 4 ingredients used in baking it doesn't get much better.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips
  • 2 cups sweetened condensed milk
  • M&M’s® White Chocolate Peppermint candies
  • M&M’s® Holiday Baking Minis
  • 1/4 teaspoon mint extract
  • Green food coloring

Directions:

  1. Line the bottom of an 8×8 pan with wax paper
  2. In a small saucepan, heat white chocolate chips and 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk, stirring constantly until melted
  3. When the mixture is melted, add the mint extract and about 5 drops of food coloring and mix until well combined
  4. Pour into the pan, and sprinkle with M&M’s® Holiday Baking Minis
  5. Place in the fridge to chill
  6. In another small saucepan, heat semi-sweet chocolate chips with 1 generous cup of sweetened condensed milk. Stir constantly so that the chocolate doesn’t burn. If the mix feels too thick, you can add a little more sweetened condensed milk.
  7. When the mixture is melted and smooth, pour on top of the chilled mint layer and M&M’s®
  8. Decorate the top of the fudge with M&M’s® White Chocolate Peppermint candies
  9. Set in the fridge to cool for 2 hours
  10. Store in your awesome Glad holiday containers!

That fudge is a beauty isn’t it? It is so perfect for the holidays. I made Lars bring it in to work because I would’ve eaten that whole thing myself if you let me. I’m a sucker for fudge.

I love the M&M’s® White Chocolate Peppermint candies. They are so beautiful. They inspired the flavor for this adorable mint fudge. And if you aren’t convinced it’s beautiful, check out this close up:

Yeah. That’s some good looking fudge.

My favorite part of the fudge is the M&M’s® surprise layer. You can see them above in between the layers. It’s a fun little extra crunch.

And since I made Lars bring the fudge in to work- the Glad packaging was perfect! I was able to fit all the fudge in one Glad holiday edition deep dish. I always love a trip to Target, so if you want an excuse to go, these Target exclusive Glad holiday edition containers are amazing.

Harry Potter Gluten Free Canary CreamsI guess you could say Harry and I are friends. I mean, I’ve read every book at least 3 times. And I listen to the audiobooks to help me sleep or on long car rides. Harry Potter is synonymous with my childhood. So naturally, I wanted to do something to celebrate his birthday.

Well I’ve seen lots of cute Harry Potter cupcakes, and I’ve seen snitch themed things from candies to cake pops. I wanted to do something I hadn’t seen before.

One of my favorite silly treats in the book was Weasly’s Wizard Wheeze’s canary creams. When you eat one, you temporarily turn into a canary. How great is that? A fun, delicious treat, and a harmless prank.

Well, Ron and George wouldn’t let me share the incantation they use to make the cookies turn you into a canary because it’s a trade secret. But, you can make the cookies, and then try to figure it out yourself.

Harry Potter Gluten Free Canary Creams

When I bake I usually use measuring cups, but I used my kitchen scale for this recipe, and I found it to be much easier! I’m definitely going to have to use it more often. I’ve only been using it for beauty recipes, but man, it’s great for baking! No worrying about leveling off your measuring cup perfectly- just pouring slowly onto the scale until you get the right amount. I highly recommend it for this recipe.

Harry Potter Gluten Free Canary Creams

Here is what the dough should look like when it is ready to be rolled out! You just need to bring it together in a ball with your hands and then roll it out between two pieces of parchment paper.

Harry Potter Gluten Free Canary Creams

How cute are these canaries? This is the cookie cutter I used.

Harry Potter Gluten Free Canary Creams

And here they are puffed up and baked. There’s always the worry when you use a cutter that the baked version won’t look as good as the raw dough- but this recipe is perfect for cutting shapes. Harry Potter Gluten Free Canary Creams

Mmm- look at that frosting! So so so thick.

Harry Potter Gluten Free Canary Creams

And with a little food dye… it’s canary yellow! The perfect color for the cream part of the canary cream. Harry Potter Gluten Free Canary Creams

And next is the easiest and most fun step- decorating! To make the cream cookie sandwiches just spread a thick layer of frosting and stack another cookie on top!

Harry Potter Gluten Free Canary Creams

They’re pretty darn cute as is.. but as always with me I had to keep going and do more cookie decorating. Frosting is just so much fun to work with. And sprinkles. And there was a lot of frosting left over so really- it would have been wasteful not to do more decorating.

Harry Potter Gluten Free Canary Creams

Ok.. so here is what you’ve been waiting for. I got the recipe from Gluten Free on a Shoestring

Ingredients:

For the cookies:

  • 2 cups (280 g) all purpose gluten free flour mix
  • 1 teaspoon xanthan gum (omit if your flour mix already has xanthan gum)
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons (22 g) confectioners sugar
  • 8 tablespoons (112 g) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 egg (60 g out of shell) at room temperature, beaten
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

For the frosting:

  • 10 tablespoons (140 g) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 4 tablespoons milk, at room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons meringue powder
  • 4 cups (460 g) confectioners sugar
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Yellow sprinkles (optional)

Instructions:

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper
  • In a large bowl, place all the dry ingredients (flour, xanthan gum, salt, and both types of sugar) and whisk until well combined
  • Add the butter, egg, and vanilla and mix to combine. You may need to use your hands a bit to bring it all together
  • Roll the dough between two sheets of parchment paper to about 1/3 of an inch thick. Cut out bird shapes and place them about 1 inch apart on prepared cookie sheets (I got my cookie cutter here)
  • Place the cookie sheets in the center of the oven and bake for about 6 minutes, or before there is any significant browning.
  • Take the cookies out and let them cool completely
  • While the cookies are cooling, make the frosting. In a stand mixer with the paddle attachment (or, if you don’t have a stand mixer, like me, a hand mixer will do) mix the butter, milk and vanilla on medium speed until well combined. Then turn the speed to high and mix until creamy
  • Add the salt, meringue powder, and about 3 1/2 cups of confectioners sugar and mix slowly until the sugar is incorporated. Once incorporated, mix on high until the frosting is uniformly thick. If necessary, add the rest of the sugar to thicken the frosting
  • Optional: Use food coloring to dye the frosting yellow. You can set some frosting aside in other bowls and use other colors as well for decorating
  • Once the cookies are completely cool, decorate to your liking!

Harry Potter Gluten Free Canary Creams

To make the decorations on my cookies, I just put some yellow and red frosting into ziplock bags and cut a tiny tiny piece off the corner of the bag. I then piped the designs onto the cookies. Aren’t they adorable?

The ziplock makeshift pastry bags are super easy to use.

Harry Potter Gluten Free Canary CreamsI think Harry will appreciate these for his birthday. It will bring him back to his Gryffindor days. He sure loves to reminisce.

Happy birthday Harry!
