Smoothing Anti-Frizz Aloe Vera Hairspray

As you may already know, I love aloe vera. Two of my favorite products that I’ve made were my Aloe Vera Face Wash and Aloe Vera Moisturizer. Aloe is just an all-around great product for beauty and health. It has so many wonderful benefits for your skin and hair. And it’s one of the few (okay- two) plants that I’ve managed to keep alive for a significant period of time.

Well I’ve been hoping to integrate aloe into my regular hair routine, so I made this hairspray. I love love love it. It is a natural detangler, is not oily, and makes my hair shiny and sleek. And it’s the simplest recipe ever!

Oh, and did I mention it only costs 39 cents to make?

So why is Aloe Vera so great? Here’s a short list of just some of the benefits it has for your hair:

  • Promotes hair growth
  • Naturally reduces dandruff
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Natural conditioning (similar to keratin chemically)
  • Maintains hair and scalp natural pH level
  • Treats itchy scalp
  • Repairs damaged hair

So how do you make this awesome hairspray? It’s super simple!

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • Mix water, aloe, and essential oil in a small bowl
  • Pour into an empty spray bottle, and shake before use
  • Spray generously onto damp hair or lightly onto dry hair

Sorry that there aren’t as many pictures as usual! I didn’t think to take pictures as I was making this hairspray because it was so simple. But honestly, the best products are simple. I don’t know what I was thinking.

I’ve integrated this aloe spray into my regular hair routine. I usually do my no-poo wash, put in a little argan oil, use homemade detangler if necessary, and once my hair is dry I sometimes put a little coconut oil on it. Well now, I use this after the argan oil and it makes my hair smell, look, and feel so good.

The first time I tried it Lars commented on how good my hair looked. For him to notice, it really had to be good! So, take it from Lars, this hairspray is awesome.

Let me know how making your own homemade aloe hairspray works for you!

Green Bathroom Cleaners Part Two On to part two of Green Bathroom Cleaners! Don’t forget to check out Green Bathroom Cleaners Part One if you missed it. Part Three will be out next week. Man, it takes a lot to keep a bathroom clean, right? Like I said in part one, bathroom cleaning products are some of the worst offenders when it comes to harmful chemicals:

  • Butoxydiglycol: toxic for the reproductive system
  • Alkyl C12-18 dimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride: Highly toxic to aquatic organisms, considered acutely toxic
  • PEG Compounds: harmful to human nervous system and can harm development, potential carcinogen
  • Artificial Fragrance: artificial fragrances can indicate up to 4000 ingredients, which can range from causing allergic reactions to being carcinogenic
  • Isobutane: irritant to eyes and skin, may be toxic to human health

And that’s just a few of the many ingredients store bought cleaners contain.

The safest way to clean your bathroom is to know every ingredient you are using. When I use commercial cleaners to clean my bathroom, I have to step out and take breaks because the fumes make me feel dizzy and awful. When I use these cleaners, there is no problem. They smell like lemon and sometimes a hint of vinegar. And they work just as well if not better.

They are also really easy on your budget. The seven green cleaners in this three part series use only five different ingredients: borax, baking soda, liquid castile soap, white distilled vinegar, and lemon essential oil. And they all cost less than a dollar to make. You can’t beat that.

This image summarizes all the cleaning recipes I will go over. Scroll down for more details and photos of the cleaners in action. Green Bathroom Cleaners Let’s start with a Green Tub and Tile Cleaner Green Bathroom Cleaners Tub and Tile Cleaner A tub and tile cleaner is a staple for bathroom cleaning. What’s a bathroom without tub and tiles right? Our bathroom has a tile floor and the walls are tile half way up. So we need a lot of this stuff. The recipe is nice and simple:

  • 1 2/3 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup liquid castile soap
  • 2 tbsp vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 10-15 drops lemon essential oil (optional)

Green Bathroom Cleaners Tub and Tile Cleaner The mixture is nice and thick and foamy. So it will need to be in a jar. I tried using a spray bottle because I was being hopeful, but it did not work. It’s too thick. The thickness is good though. The baking soda is just gritty enough to give it good scrubbing ability and the castile soap makes it foam nicely.Green Bathroom Cleaners Tub and Tile Cleaner You can see from this picture just how dirty our tub got. It’s pretty embarrassing. So focus on the cleaner instead. You can tell how thick and foamy it is. Great for scrubbing.Green Bathroom Cleaners Tub and Tile Cleaner And here is our clean tub after using this tub and tile cleaner! Awesome!Green Bathroom Cleaners Tub and Tile Cleaner And the floor. I’m also embarrassed to show this picture. The brown stain is from a honey face mask I tried out. I just felt like I should explain it. It was really drippy. Green Bathroom Cleaners Tub and Tile Cleaner And check out that floor after! Love this tub and tile cleaner. And on to the next cleaner…

Homemade green window cleanerNow that it’s warming up, we are opening the windows pretty much daily. And I’ve really noticed just how dirty we let the windows get over the winter. Just covered in dust and fingerprints and general yuckiness. I swear we barely touched the windows all winter, how did those fingerprints even get there? Windows are a mystery. But they show EVERYTHING. So a good cleaner is a necessity. This window cleaner is awesome, inexpensive, and gives an amazing streak free clean

The leading store-bought window cleaner includes plenty harmful impossible-to-pronounce ingredients:

  • 2-Hexoxyethanol causes severe skin and eye burns
  • Sodium C14-17 Sec-Alkyl Sulfonate is hazardous to aquatic environments and also causes eye and skin irritation
  • Propylene Glycol can cause skin, liver, and kidney damage
  • Artificial Fragrances are protected trade secrets that can contain up to 4000 separate ingredients that can be dangerous to health and the environment
  • Artificial Colors are sometimes derived from petroleum and are a potential carcinogen

At the very least, you should want to avoid the eye and skin irritation when you clean by making your own green window cleaner. I’m telling you, green cleaning can actually be enjoyable when you aren’t worried about feeling dizzy from chemicals or getting cancer. If you want to learn more about switching to green cleaning, read my 5 step guide.

This window cleaner is guaranteed to save you money and expose you to less chemicals than any cleaner you can buy in the store. One batch of this cleaner cost 32 cents. I could definitely clean all the windows in my apartment with that one batch. You can’t beat that price. And it will also give you a streak free clean!

Homemade green window cleaner

The picture above is the before picture. Sorry my photography skills aren’t amazing so I couldn’t totally capture just how dirty the window was- but you can see the line of grimy fingerprints and water spots across the top.

I’m kind of glad you can’t see just how bad the window was because it is kind of embarrassing how dirty we let the windows get!Homemade green window cleanerAnd here is the after picture! You wouldn’t even know it was a window if not for the reflection and screen behind the window. Perfectly clear, clean, and awesome. No more fingerprints or water spots!

What is it about newspaper that makes them so good for cleaning windows and glass? Does anyone know? Because they really do an amazing job of getting rid of streaks.

So, try this window cleaner out. You won’t be disappointed. Your health, environment, and bank account will thank you!
