Green tea is amazing for your skin. It’s no secret that I love this awesome ingredient! That’s why I wanted to make a new face wash that made use of green tea. It is great for people with sensitive skin, and it is naturally anti-inflammatory. Plus the green tea can reduce the appearance of pores and make your skin look fresh and happy!
As someone with sensitive skin and redness myself, I like to be careful about what I put on my skin. Making my own face wash helps me to be confident that I know exactly what goes into my products and also know that they are healthy for my skin and most importantly, safe. (And it doesn’t hurt that it also usually costs less to make things myself).
I’ve previously made a honey face wash, and an aloe vera face wash. I loved both (and I still do). But I’m loving using green tea in my recipes so much lately that I wanted to make another. And this green tea and honey face wash does not disappoint!
In combination with my green tea face scrub, this seriously is amazing for my skin. But don’t be intimidated- it’s super easy to make. And even better, it only costs $4!
This recipe only has natural ingredients that are good for your skin. If you want to know where to buy these ingredients, just click on the name of the ingredient. Here’s why I chose them:
- Green Tea Powder: Full of antioxidants and vitamins your skin needs, anti-inflammatory to reduce redness and irritation, the caffeine in green tea helps tighten skin and reduce the appearance of pores
- Honey: A natural humectant (draws moisture into the skin), naturally antibacterial, full of antioxidants
- Soapwort Extract: Has a high concentration of natural saponins (help clean your skin), gentle suds, gentle natural face wash
- Avocado Oil: Full of vitamin E and antioxidants that are healthy for your skin, natural moisturizer
- Essential Oils: Can have different benefits depending on the oil. I used chamomile in this recipe, but lavender, tea tree, and geranium are all also good anti-inflammatory oils.
Green Tea Honey Face Wash
(makes about 2 oz)
Ingredients:
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 3 tablespoons avocado oil
- 2 tablespoons soapwort extract
- 1/2 tsp matcha green tea powder
- 5-10 drops essential oils
Instructions:
- Mix all ingredients together until thoroughly combined (I mixed with a fork for about 2 minutes)
- Transfer to an air tight bottle
- To use, wet your skin, apply face wash with clean hands by rubbing in small circles, and wash off with warm water. It won’t foam a lot but should make a small amount of tiny suds.
Since the face wash has so much honey, it may feel a little stickier than you are used to, but it doesn’t make it any less amazing! When you wash it off you’ll see just how wonderful it is. Your skin will thank you!
I’m in love with this amazing face wash. Try making it yourself and let me know if you love it too!

Could I use green tree extract instead of the powder? Thank you
Susie says
I’ve never worked with it myself, but I would assume you could use it. With extracts a little can go a very long way so I would try it quite sparingly, only a few drops. This is just speculation, as I haven’t used it myself.
Kim says
Whats THE shelf life of this product.
Susie says
If made and stored properly, it should last a few months.
Nadia says
How long did the facial wash will last without any preservatives?
Susie says
It should last a few months depending on how well you store it.
Jessica says
Commenting again because I mistyped my email address :) I wonder if I could use Castile soap in place of soapwort?
Susie says
You could, but it doesn’t have the same anti-inflammatory properties and its a little more harsh on the skin.
Signe says
Thank you so much for this recipe! Going to try this out!
One question, will this remove makeup?
Susie says
Yes, it should.

Susie says
I used a 4 ounce container similar to this, but the recipe makes less than 4 ounces so you could probably get away with 3.
Jennifer says
How well does this work for acne? Do you recommend anything for acne?! Thank you!!
Susie says
Hi Jennifer. Acne is so different for everyone, so I can’t say definitively that it will help with it, but it is worth a try. I’ve used noncomedogenic and anti-inflammatory ingredients, but that doesn’t mean it will make a difference for everyone and all skin types.
Karen says
Is there a sub for the extract-just don’t have the $ right now but want to try this?
Susie says
You can replace it with a small amount of castile soap, but it doesn’t have the same anti-inflammatory properties and does make some people break out. I also make my own soapwort extract by soakin soapwort root in vegetable glycerin for several days and straining it. Good luck!
Tasja says
Hi Jennifer, i see in the picture that you are using Rocky Mountain Oils-Roman Chamomile essential oils. Would you recommend their brand of oils and are they good quality?
Thank you!
Susie says
I don’t know about Jennifer, but I absolutely recommend RMO, and if you want to know why I wrote a post about it.

I think I am ready to take the next step and to make my personal care products. For the most part, it should save money and is much, much healthier for us. Thanks for sharing this recipe. This one will be the first personal care product that I make myself!
Jillian says
Where is a good place to buy green tea powder and soapworts extract?
Thank you!
Susie says
You can find green tea powder in a health food store, but I’ve only ever seen soapwort extract online. I get both from amazon.
Kay says
How well does this exfoliate? Is there something I could add to do the job, besides sugar? I find sugar grains too large to remove dead skin well but don’t know what else would work. Hoping to make this similar to St. Ive’s green tea scrub.
Susie says
I haven’t used St. Ive’s scrub so I can’t speak to it personally. You can try using oatmeal instead of sugar or replace half the sugar with oatmeal.
Lisa Hrovat says
Can I follow up with my Rosewater toner? Also, what about moisturizer?
Susie says
Yes, you can absolutely follow up with toner and moisturizer.
Caecilia says
Dear susie,
Can I skip soapwort extract? I cant find it in my hometown. I’ve read the comments above and castile soap is not a good choice for sensitive skin. Thank you.
Susie says
Hi Caecillia. The Soapwort extract is the cleaning agent in the face wash, so without it, the wash will be much less effective.
S says
Instead of green Tea powder. Can I use green tea from the tea bag? Thanks.
Susie says
I’m not sure, I have not tried it.
